Knowledge Services Briefing: Development Opportunities and People News - Issue 001 - 15th August 2019

Quality and Improvement Outcomes Framework - supporting documents and future webinars:

Hopefully you will all be aware by now that the Quality and Improvement Outcome Framework Documentation is now available on the Knowledge for Healthcare blog. Here you will find the Framework, guidance documents, the introductory webinar and the webinar recently held that focused solely on Outcome One. Following the Outcome One webinar and based on the feedback provided, we have decided that the rest of the webinars will be pre-recorded and made available to you to listen to whenever you wish to. These will be available by mid October at the latest. We will keep you up to date as the webinars are published.


National Training

E-Resource Usage Statistics Webinars: Announcing a series of webinars on usage statistics. The dates are:

  • 11th September, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m
  • 17th October, 10 a.m. – 11 a.m
  • 12th November, 2 p.m. – 3 p.m
  • 23rd January, 3 p.m. – 4 p.m
  • 11th February, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m

Each session is scheduled to last about an hour. If you find obtaining and interpreting e-resource usage statistics difficult then this webinar may be for you. Sessions will cover key terms, common COUNTER 4 and 5 reports, some useful supplier reports when COUNTER is not available, what these reports tell you, which one to use for your resources and how best to obtain them.

The session will be using WebEx and joining instructions will be sent nearer the time of each session. If you interested in attending one of these webinars, please reply to Richard Bridgen with your signature block and your preferred webinar date.

Midlands Regional Trainers’ Forum: We would like to inform you that this year our Annual NHS Midlands Regional Trainers' Forum Conference will be held on Friday 13th September at the Uffculme Centre, Birmingham. This free event has been running for nine years, is always very well attended and has excellent feedback.This year, the agenda includes a presentation by the London Searchers and Trainers Forum and also a session on critically appraising infographics.

Critical appraisal course in the Midlands: John Blenkinsopp, who is a brilliant teacher of Critical Appraisal, will be holding a session at George Eliot Hospital, Nuneaton, Warwickshire on Friday 11th October 2019. The session will be covering Critical Appraisal systematic reviews, qualitative research, and facilitation tips. A full agenda is here. The cost will be £120 per person and that will include lunch and refreshments. Please email Stephen Ayre if you or a colleague would like to attend.

Forthcoming Meetings and Events in the South

Library Assistants’ Networking Day: To be held on Wednesday 11th September, NEWBURY – Shaw House and Friday 13th September, TAUNTON – Musgrove Park Hospital: Our bi-annual gathering for library assistants to update, network and share knowledge & experiences. This year among the topics will be the new regional library management system due to go live in 2020, and the Quality and Improvement Outcomes Framework.

NHS South Library & Knowledge Services Conference 2019: To be held on Tuesday 1st October Bristol, We the Curious, Bristol Harbourside: Our annual conference, this year with the theme “a little difference can make a big change”. Ruth Carlyle will be the morning’s keynote speaker, revisiting her CILIP presentation on health literacy, and there will be a knowledge café. After lunch our second keynote speaker will be exploring themes of diversity and inclusion in NHS LKS, and then delegates will have a choice of 6 workshops in two parallel sessions. The full conference programme, together with other details of all NHS South CPD events, can be found on the regional LibGuides site.


People and Regional Network News

Fab Hat! Sue Robertson, Knowledge Services Development Lead, South West, Thames Valley and Wessex, recently attended her daughter's wedding. Colleagues were so impressed with her amazing hat that they insisted she share a photograph with us all.

EBLIP 10: Conference report from Stephen Ayre, Library Services Manager, George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust

Northern Lights: A special edition of Northern Lights which focuses on the recent "It's Great Up North" event has been published. Northern Lights is the online blog/magazine by and for the Northern Health Libraries community.

HCLU Monthly Report: The HCLU monthly report for aim 4 on our implementation plan "Patients, carers and the public are empowered to make health and well being choices" has been added to the LKS North website. This report covers the period February 2019 to July 2019.
