Staff changes at Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS FT

Following the retirement of Susan Bell in summer 2019, Ailsa Haigh has recently been promoted to the role of Senior Library Assistant for e-resources. The CNTW team bid farewell to Marion Bilton, based at Hopewood Park (formerly Cherry Knowle) in Ryhope, at the end of January 2020. Marion is a long serving library assistant within the team and is looking forward to her retirement. The library at Hopweood Park will be operating reduced hours from mid January.…

Reflecting on "Introduction to Health Librarianship," - a new module at Manchester Metropolitan University

For the first time, a module focusing specifically on health librarianship has been added to the programme for the MA Library and Information Management at Manchester Metropolitan University. The module is led by Dr Geoff Walton, and provides an overview of the knowledge and skills required to provide library and knowledge services to an NHS or health organisation. Students on the module, like me, were fortunate to receive guest lectures from 17 health librarians, who each gave an insight into their career as well as exploring topics related to the field of health libraries.…

Obituary - Ian P.G. King, 1948-2019

Ian King, for many years the manager of health library services at Bradford Royal Infirmary and an active spokesperson for health libraries in Yorkshire, died in August of this year. Known locally and nationally, Ian was seen by numerous librarians as being, for many crucial years, the 'go to' person for help and advice, which was always unstintingly given. He was regarded with a rare blend of respect and affection by the many colleagues he helped and mentored.…

NHS Rainbow Badges

Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust and York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust have recently introduced the Rainbow Badge scheme. Despite improving social attitudes in general towards LGBT+ people in the UK, negative attitudes (such as homophobia, biphobia, transphobia) are still widely prevalent. Moreover there are barriers to healthcare services for young LGBT+ people and a recent survey found that 1 in 7 LGBT people avoid seeking healthcare for fear of discrimination from staff (Stonewall, 2018). NHS Rainbow badges are a way to show that the organisation is a non-judgmental and an inclusive place for LGBT+ service users and staff. As a simple visible symbol, the badges can make a big difference for those who may be unsure of the reception they will receive if they disclose their sexuality and/or gender identity.…

Popping up across Leeds - taking the library to where the users are

As a library serving a community care trust, the Leeds CCG, two local hospices and the council’s public health staff, we struggle to reach most of our users because they work all across the city. Maria was aware of pop-up libraries from her days working in the academic sector and suggested they made perfect sense in our circumstances, since they basically consist of taking a selection of materials and resources out of the library to where its users actually are. As a result, about a year ago, we started organising Leeds Community Health (LCH) Library Pop-Ups at our staff bases all over Leeds.…
