This has been an extremely busy year for the service at East Lancs Hospitals NHS Trust. In March 2019, Abbas Bismillah, our new Head of Library and Knowledge Services took up post

CHARGES

We no longer charge for ILL or Library Fines and the results have seen better use of our resources with fantastic customer feedback.

SOCIAL MEDIA TRAINING

This has been a fantastic success. We have seen many students and staff from a variety of health disciplines requesting training.

REFLECTIVE READING CLUB @ EAST LANCASHIRE HOSPITALS NHS TRUST

From April 2019, we offered Reflective Reading Clubs. LKS staff, students and our NHS staff have facilitated sessions. Some of these sessions have been attended by up to 14 staff/students.

BMJ LEARNING

We took out a successful subscription to BMJ Learning. We recognised that CPD funding has seen some cutbacks and so to ensure that all our staff has access to quality resources, we took out a 1 year subscription. Uptake has been very good and feedback exceptional.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

East Lancashire Hospital NHS Trust (ELHT) held their annual Health & Wellbeing event at Royal Blackburn Hospital on Wednesday 22nd May 2019. It’s a full day event where there are lots of information stands and activities promoting services including Quit Squad -smoking cessation, electric bikes, Unison, walking activities to name a few. The Trust library service has always taken the opportunity to attend these events and promote our wellbeing resources to support staff; however, this year it was done slightly different.

The newly appointed Head of Library and Knowledge Services at ELHT, Abbas Bismillah had recently met with Adele Karwat, Service Manager: Libraries and Archives (Public Health and Wellbeing at Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council) and together discussed how our staff, patients and members of the public could be supported in obtaining the health and wellbeing information. The H&W event seemed the ideal opportunity for BwD libraries to join us and showcase what both of our services could offer

INSTITUTIONAL REPOSITORY

We decided to use our LMS, Heritage to record and showcase all the published literature from NHS staff

HOT DRINKS

STAFFING

In September, we appointed a full time Clinical Librarian. Previously, this post was part time but due to the success of the team, we were successful in putting forward a business case to increase our staffing. Patrick Glaister was appointed as Clinical Librarian. It is pleasing to note that we have recorded the highest return for literature searches at East Lancs Hospitals NHS Trust. In addition to this, Patrick has been supporting and facilitating journal clubs at the trust with huge success.

We now provide an extensive training programme that aims to develop staff and student research skills.

INDUCTION

The Education Directorate reviewed the induction programme that we provide for all our students. LKS now has a slot at induction and Head of Service, supported by the LKS team has presented and demonstrated the many resources that we have. The uptake of this is more staff and students registering and using our services.  Of particular note are our Physician Associate, Advanced Clinical Practitioners, OTs, nurses and students.
